Seven dead after drone strike hit fuel depot causing huge fire in Kharkiv

There were nearly 100 clashes between Kyiv’s troops and Putin’s forces along the frontline over the last day, Ukraine’s army said.

Kyiv said Russia launched 34 missile attacks and 85 air strikes which destroyed private buildings, educational institutions and killed civilians.

It comes as the US warned the key town of Avdiivka is at risk of falling to Vladimir Putin’s forces as it is claimed a shopping centre in Russia’s Belgorod has been hit by a deadly Ukrainian strike.

“During the past day, there were 95 battles. In total, the enemy carried out 34 missiles and 85 air strikes, carried out 114 shelling from volcano fire jet systems across the positions of our troops and settlements,” Ukraine’s army said.

“As a result of the Russian terrorist attacks, unfortunately, there are wounded and killed among the civilian population. Demolition and damage were suffered by multi-storey and private buildings, educational institutions and critical infrastructure objects.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine said it was withdrawing troops from some parts of Avdiivka to better positions and rotating fresh forces to push back a rapid Russian takeover of the town.

Watch: Alexei Navalny’s ‘final message’ to Russian people

Alexei Navalny’s “final message” to Russian people was recorded in a documentary before his death was reported by the prison service of the Yamalo-Nenets region where he had been serving his sentence on Friday, 16 February. Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic appeared in a 2022 documentary film by Daniel Roher about the events related to his poisoning in 2020. In this clip, Roher asks him what message he would leave behind if he is killed. “I’ve got something very obvious to tell you. You’re not allowed to give up,” the opposition leader says in Russian as he looks straight into the camera.

Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny dead, prison service say

Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is dead, the prison service of the Yamalo-Nenets region where he had been serving his sentence has said.

Navalny, 47, was Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most visible and prominent critic. He had recently been moved to a jail near the Arctic Circle where he was serving almost two decades on charges that supporters and much of the international community believed were trumped up in order to silence him.

The federal prison service said in a statement that Mr Navalny felt unwell after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness. An ambulance arrived to try to rehabilitate him, but he died, the statement added.

Mr Navalny’s lawyer have not had any confirmation of his death, according to his team.
